Fake News: Satire

Final Film:

Satire is defined as “the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticise people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.”

For my final project I’ve chosen to do a satire based on shows like The day today, Brass eye and The mash report. My film hopefully will have 4 elements of news satire: Reporter Links in the style of BBC documentaries and monty python, ‘interviews’ with professional people who know nothing, a 1 on 1 political style interview and ‘opinions’ from the ‘public’.

I only came up with the idea for this film on Monday (19/11) and I have rushed to write/make it. If I had more time I would of been able to focus more on the script and produce something more complex but with the time I had, was better then expected.

inspiration for video: brass eye, the day today, not the nine o’clock news, monty python, the mash report… etc

Brass Eye, the channel 4 program that aired in 1997 with a one off in 2001, is the my biggest inspiration for my video. The show, created by the comedian, satirist and director Chris Morris, was a 30 minute satirical look on social issue in particular the sensationalism by the media. The most famous of these was the 2001 special entitled ‘Peadogeddon’ which looked at the peadophilia, moral panic and the name and shame campaigns ran by newspapers. In the episode they had roped in celebrities to advertise a fake charity called ‘nonce sense’.  clip from that episode: here

The mash report is a modern take on the news satire format, being “the only fake news show”. Similar to brass eye with the inclusion of real news presented in a comical way. Clip from series 1: here

The day today was created by Chris Morris (Brass Eye) and Armando Iannuccci (The death of Stalin), the original British news satire which saw the likes of Rebecca Front, Doon Mackichan, Graham Linehan and Steve Coogan (the latter creating the iconic character of Alan Partridge.) Clip from show: here

I just spent 3 hours editing to not save it properly and to lose all my work minutes before the deadline.

The final video isn’t as good as the edit I lost. Its a bit rushed and clunky.

Lenses and exposure

What the is exposure?

Exposure is a mix of 3 camera technologies, aperture, shutter speed and ISO

What the is focal length?

Focal length is the range the lens can capture.

What the is aperture and how the is it controlled?

Aperture controls how much light gets into the lens and the field of depth. It’s controlled by the ‘F’ stop, Higher the ‘F’ stop the less light gets in etc

What the is shutter speed?

shutter speed controls the amount light captured, eg slower shutter speed = more light intake

what the is ISO?

Iso is the level of light sensitivity in the camera, higher the iso the more sensitive it’s to light but more digital noise.

James Bond remake

I started the project a little late and joined a group remaking a scene from ‘A View To Kill’ with Rodger Moore as Bond.

The short scene involves 7 shots (3 close up, 4 wide/tracking), 4 actors and props included keys, notepad, map, lamp and filling cabinet. locations were elevator, corridor and dark room.

We needed a elevator for the beginning of the scene so we went to (the other campus name) to use the elevator there. Whilst there we found the corridors bit narrow for the shot but decided to edit around that using other parts of the corridor.

other possible locations include: upstairs and downstairs here?

In the filing room scene we blocked out as much light as possible to create the dark room for the lamp to light up, (the lamp was a phone taped to a chair), but in blocking all the light out it gave the shot this grey washed look which has to be edited in post.

FAKE NEWS

Fake news is the modern version of propaganda

7 types of propaganda:

  • Transfer – The act of relating something or someone we like or respect with a product
  • Testimonial – The use of well know persons to endorse a product
  • Glittering genralalities – The act of referring to words or ideas that envoke a positive emotional reaction from the audience
  • Plain folks – The use of everyday people to sell a product or service
  • Band waggon – Atempts to persuade the target audience to take a course of action, this plays on peoples desire to be on the winning side.
  • Name calling – The use of names that evoke fear and hatred.
  • Card stacking – Stratergy of showing products best side. Telling half-truths and emitting or lying about its problems.

propergander (or pathe news) is a govament and regimes way of controling the populas by feeding false info to them. propaganda can be used by anyone, eg: Media, companies and activist groups. cults

Paid adverts in news/presented as news. sponsard ads

Fake news has always been around, the most popular example being aprils fools day where credited news platforms would delibretly place a false but light hearted story on there platform, eg: spaghetti trees.

Fake news has devoloped into a machine of lies…..

false report on celebraties death….

false missing persons after a big event….

facebook is a great way to spread fake news as it sets it self up as a credited platform when in reality almost anything can be put up on facebook….

fake news is also on credited platforms sometimes as a genuine error. Fake news can be found in such papers ‘the daily mail’, ‘the sun’, ‘the times’.

The daily Mail is the biggest online news platform in the world, it is also a unreliable source of infomation and has been banned from wikipedia as a result.

Example: In 2013 the daily mail reported, when work restrictions on Romanians and Bulgarias working in the uk were lifted, that flights between the countries and uk were sold out. this was proven to be false and in addition the number of workers coming to uk had fallen by aprox 60,000.

The sun until march 2018 had the highest circulation in uk. The tabloid is owned by ‘News Uk’ which is owned by Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch is one of the most wealthy and influencel persons in the worlds with at one point owning over 800 companies in over 50 countries, including Fox News, 21st centries fox, The Times and The wall street journal. His various companies have had a multiude of scandals over the years. The most notable being The former News of the world, which in july 2011 was forced to shut down after the scandal where news of the world was acused of tapping peoples phones. which resulted in the arrests of 4 former editors. After the closeure of news of the world the sun newspaper (a part of the murdoch empire) released the sun on Sunday, which hired a lot of former reporters from the news of the world.

In 2010 the sun reported that coronation street was under police protection due to a tip off that al-qaeda where planning an attack. 3 weeks later the sun was forced to issue an appolagie stating there was specifc threat from al-qaeda.

Donald Trump is at the centre of a fake news storm, he’s either perportrated the fake news or the fake news is about him. He uses the term fake news to discredit news platforms that he doesnt like, which seems to be every news platform besides Fox news, Breitbart and info wars, all of which have been havens for fake news.

Screen Shot 2018-10-09 at 15.34.31.png

Example: “…negative (Fake)”

He popularised the term fake news during the 2016 us presidential elections. He started a rhectoric about the mainsteam media pinning them as ‘The Man’ who tries to control the people. Constently calling the media fake news to delegitamize there stories and create a us vs them rhectoric. He also uses the phrase “enemies of the people” to tear the media but this phrase has roots in Totaliariansim, the phrase was used by Stalin, Hitler and Mao, to control there people and create justifaction to there atrocites.

Fake news has been a real life changing problem for many people. Fake news has been used in a tactiful way by russia to influence democracy. They used Twitter and Facebook to create polarising opinions amongst social groups thus dividing them. “Divide and conquer”. The more these groups are divided the more isolated they become in there own ‘opinion bubble’. The more they isolate themselves from differing views the more of there own opinion is fed back to them creating a vicous circle of self approval. This division of minds created a in for russia to asert there own views and vaules which is then lapped up by the isolated.

Fake news is a breeding ground for hate. You can come up with the most horrible story about your enemy, post it online and someone will believe it. Fake news has helped the spike in islamicphobea around the world, most extreme example of this is in Myanmar. In Mynama there is budist monk called Wirathu, he posts videos on youtube and facebook spreading a message of hate towards muslims in Myanmar. His words are widely recived in Myanmar and has supposed to of directly inspired fighting in Rakhine state which resulted in death of 200 people and displacement of 100,000.

Facebook is so comon in burma that its interchangable with the word internet.

info wars…

i go onto the infowars website the firstheadline: “INVASION! FACEBOOK ROBOTS TO SPY ON HOME OWNERS AND REPORT BACK TO CHINA.” lol

breitbart – simular to infowars, conected to cambridge analitca and steve bannon/nigel farage

Clickbate is a specific type of fake news, where often false or half truths are used in a catchy headline to get people to click on the link

Clickbait is online stories with and enticing often false headlines that draw the reader in

Interviews and Docs

Michael Moore – Bowling for Columbine

Filmed interviews can take many forms, from informal relaxed discussions to professional Q&A news interviews.

Michael Moore is a Documentary maker/ comedian, who makes a wide range of documentaries on numerous subjects often presenting a left wing view.

In his film ‘Bowling for Columbine’ he interviews Charlton Heston at his house, discussing guns and shootings. The camera’s focus on Heston, often leaving Moore out of shot. Moore steers the interview towards the violence of guns leaving Heston in a position to defend his ownership and promotions of guns. Heston is portrayed in the interview as gun loving, insensitive and un-knowlegable about the subject. The interview appeared to be bias and leading towards making Heston look like a ‘gun toting maniac’.

Moore also interviews Marilyn Manson in the same film, about his supposive negative effect on pop culture and violence. He interviews manson backstage at a gig, the setting is informal and feels more like a open discussion then a Q&A. The film was intersected with clips from protest and individuals against Marilyn Manson, this gave the perplexing view of sanity from the ‘anarchist’ and anger from the protesters

The 2 interviews have many differences, primarily the tone in way it was conducted. Manson’s interview was a laid back discussion whereas Heston’s was more confrontational with Moore asking for apologies. Moore’s film about about the shooting in columbine shows a multitude of opinions with a obvious swing towards the more left wing views.

I found this documentary interesting in subject but poor in execution, the mix of interviews and archive footage tried to emote the viewers but I felt it was lacking the substance of a impartial documentary.
